چکیده

We show that any rational polytope is polynomial-time representable as a “slim” r × c× 3 three-way line-sum transportation polytope. This universality theorem has important consequences for linear and integer programming and for confidential statistical data disclosure. It provides polynomial-time embedding of arbitrary linear programs and integer programs in such slim transportation programs and in bipartite biflow programs. It resolves several standing problems on 3-way transportation polytopes. It demonstrates that the range of values an entry can attain in any slim 3-way contingency table with specified 2-margins can contain arbitrary gaps, suggesting that disclosure of k-margins of d-tables for 2 ≤ k < d is confidential. Our construction also provides a powerful tool in studying concrete questions about transportation polytopes and contingency tables; remarkably, it enables to automatically recover the famous “real-feasible integerinfeasible” 6×4×3 transportation polytope of M. Vlach, and to produce the first example of 2-margins for 6× 4× 3 contingency tables where the range of values a specified entry can attain has a gap.

All Linear and Integer Programs Are Slim 3-Way Transportation Programs

We show that any rational convex polytope is polynomial-time representable as a three-way linesum transportation polytope of “slim” (r, c, 3) format. This universality theorem has important consequences for linear and integer programming and for confidential statistical data disclosure. We provide a polynomial-time embedding of arbitrary linear programs and integer programs in such slim transpo...

Ehrhart f*-Coefficients of Polytopal Complexes are Non-negative Integers

The Ehrhart polynomial LP of an integral polytope P counts the number of integer points in integral dilates of P . Ehrhart polynomials of polytopes are often described in terms of their Ehrhart h∗-vector (aka Ehrhart δ-vector), which is the vector of coefficients of LP with respect to a certain binomial basis and which coincides with the h-vector of a regular unimodular triangulation of P (if o...

Asymptotic Estimates for the Number of Contingency Tables, Integer Flows, and Volumes of Transportation Polytopes

We prove an asymptotic estimate for the number of m×n non-negative integer matrices (contingency tables) with prescribed row and column sums and, more generally, for the number of integer feasible flows in a network. Similarly, we estimate the volume of the polytope of m × n non-negative real matrices with prescribed row and column sums. Our estimates are solutions of convex optimization proble...

Maximum Entropy Gaussian Approximations for the Number of Integer Points and Volumes of Polytopes

We describe a maximum entropy approach for computing volumes and counting integer points in polyhedra. To estimate the number of points from a particular set X ⊂ Rn in a polyhedron P ⊂ Rn, by solving a certain entropy maximization problem, we construct a probability distribution on the set X such that a) the probability mass function is constant on the set P ∩X and b) the expectation of the dis...

19 Polytope Skeletons and Paths

The k-dimensional skeleton of a d-polytope P is the set of all faces of the polytope of dimension at most k. The 1-skeleton of P is called the graph of P and denoted by G(P ). G(P ) can be regarded as an abstract graph whose vertices are the vertices of P , with two vertices adjacent if they form the endpoints of an edge of P . In this chapter, we will describe results and problems concerning g...
